At the booth, Matt walked me through what hunters had been asking for next: illumination, a more hunt-friendly magnification range, and HD glass \u2014 without turning the Helix into a jack-of-all-trades that masters nothing. Hunters kept asking for an illuminated reticle. Instead of bolting illum onto the existing tube, Element rebuilt the package around hunting: <strong>2\u201316\u00d7<\/strong> (instead of the old 4\u201324\u00d7), <strong>second focal plane<\/strong>, <strong>HD glass<\/strong> for that 8\u00d7 zoom range, and illumination as a first-class feature.<\/p>\n<p>Different hunting cultures inside the company (South Africa \/ U.S. \/ Sweden) couldn\u2019t agree on one \u201cperfect\u201d hunter scope \u2014 Western open country vs Eastern timber is a real split \u2014 so they shipped <strong>two<\/strong> variants instead of a compromised all-rounder.<\/p>\n<h2>Helix HD \u2014 capped, simple, dawn-and-dusk friendly<\/h2>\n<p>On the table first: <strong>capped elevation and windage<\/strong>, low-profile, <strong>no zero stop<\/strong> on this model. Thread-protector rings are in the box if you want to run the turrets exposed \u2014 Matt said it still tracks well if you dial \u2014 but the default buyer is someone who mostly holds, not spins turrets every shot.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>BDC reticle<\/strong> with an <strong>illuminated center dot<\/strong> \u2014 simple crosshair plus a few hash marks for that 200\u2013300 yard poke<\/li>\n<li>Framed for European \/ Eastern U.S. hunters (whitetail, closer shots, low light)<\/li>\n<li>Also a stepping stone for shooters who aren\u2019t ready for Christmas-tree reticles and exposed turrets yet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BDC calibration tip from the booth (SFP, so magnification matters): at <strong>8\u00d7<\/strong> they called it out for a <strong>.308 Win \/ 168 gr<\/strong> soft-point hunting load; around <strong>10\u00d7<\/strong> it lined up closer to a <strong>6.5 Creedmoor \/ 143 gr ELD-X<\/strong>-class load. Play with mag, find your match, leave it there for holdovers. The <strong>8<\/strong> is highlighted in red on purpose \u2014 they put the BDC reference mid-zoom so you\u2019re not stuck at max power if that isn\u2019t your load. Box also includes little round stickers for the flip cap so you can write your own drops for whatever mag\/load you settle on.<\/p>\n<h2>Helix HDLR \u2014 same glass idea, dial-for-distance hunting<\/h2>\n<p>Same hunting DNA, different turret story: <strong>exposed elevation<\/strong> (the Helix-line turret Matt kept praising for click feel), <strong>zero stop<\/strong>, and about <strong>100 MOA<\/strong> of elevation travel \u2014 wild for a hunting scope. Windage stays simpler; the reticle shifts from BDC to Element\u2019s <strong>APR-1C<\/strong> (MOA; MRAD option on tape) \u2014 still a \u201csimple for Element\u201d hold reticle, calibrated at <strong>16\u00d7<\/strong> (16 highlighted) because that\u2019s where SFP subtensions are honest.<\/p>\n<p>Target shooter in Matt\u2019s head: Western \/ open-country hunters who might actually need a calculator and a dial for a valley shot \u2014 the guys telling me about 800-yard elk while East Coast me is still celebrating a clean 50-yard lane.<\/p>\n<p>Both models: parallax down to about <strong>10 meters\/yards<\/strong>. Matt\u2019s claim on tape \u2014 just because these aren\u2019t pitched as PRS scopes doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t track like the rest of the Element line.<\/p>\n<h2>Price &amp; where it sits in the lineup (as taped)<\/h2>\n<p>Availability: \u201cplenty.\u201d Street talk on the booth floor landed around <strong>$600<\/strong> retail \u2014 roughly mid-stack between classic Helix features and Titan-class HD glass. Matt\u2019s framing: not \u201ccheap,\u201d just feature-packed hunting glass that fills the gap after Nexus \/ Titan \/ original Helix already covered precision and value lanes.<\/p>\n<p>Treat this as a 2023 Shot Show first look at the Helix HD \/ HDLR hunter concept.
