It feels like an AR-15. It is <strong>not<\/strong> an AR-15. Modern .308 \/ 6.5 Creedmoor \u201cARs\u201d mostly mean full-size AR-10 platforms: bigger receivers, heavier reciprocating mass, and shooting manners that often feel more bench-gun than run-and-gun.<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of shops have tried small-frame .308 ARs. What we hadn\u2019t seen from a major manufacturer at a normal gun-store price \u2014 until this \u2014 is Ruger\u2019s take. On tape I framed the question simply: should this be your next hunting rifle or entry-level semi-auto precision gun?<\/p>\n<h2>Barrels, brake, and the two SKUs<\/h2>\n<p>Launch lineup is two barrel lengths, same DNA otherwise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>16&#8243;<\/strong> and <strong>20&#8243;<\/strong> cold hammer-forged <strong>4140 chromoly<\/strong> barrels<\/li>\n<li><strong>5R<\/strong> rifling, nitride finish<\/li>\n<li><strong>1:10<\/strong> twist \u2014 oriented toward heavier bullets (think ~168 gr and up) and even subsonic .308 with 200\u2013220 gr projectiles<\/li>\n<li>Threaded <strong>5\/8&times;24<\/strong> for suppressors and brakes<\/li>\n<li>Ships with Ruger\u2019s <strong>Two-Port Boomer<\/strong> muzzle brake \u2014 Ruger claims up to ~<strong>30%<\/strong> felt-recoil reduction (and yes, effective brakes are loud)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gas system length matches the barrel: <strong>rifle-length<\/strong> on the 20&#8243;, <strong>mid-length<\/strong> on the 16&#8243;. Weight as taped: about <strong>6.8 lb<\/strong> (16&#8243;) and <strong>7.3 lb<\/strong> (20&#8243;). One <strong>20-round Magpul<\/strong> mag in the box. MSRP on tape: <strong>$1,229<\/strong>, with street talk around <strong>~$1,000<\/strong> \u2014 2022 numbers; shop today\u2019s tags. Optics-ready; no iron sights included.<\/p>\n<h2>Handguard, adjustable gas, receivers<\/h2>\n<p>Slim M-LOK handguard with Picatinny only at the very front and rear \u2014 first time I\u2019d seen Ruger ditch the mid-rail cheese grater on an AR of theirs. Great for a hard C-clamp; also puts your support hand closer to a gas block that will get hot, especially suppressed.<\/p>\n<p>Cool part: a <strong>click-adjustable gas block with four positions<\/strong> (not just a set screw). Adjust with a <strong>3\/16&#8243;<\/strong> wrench stashed in the pistol grip \u2014 ball-end so you can sneak it through the rail. On the 20&#8243; you can often reach from the front; on the 16&#8243; there\u2019s a side cutout for access.<\/p>\n<p>Upper looks mostly like a standard AR upper with a larger opening; the lower is clearly redesigned around <strong>SR-25 pattern<\/strong> magazines, with a flared magwell. Trigger pocket is shifted rearward to buy room for their small-frame BCG approach \u2014 which also means some \u201clocking bar \/ roller\u201d race triggers won\u2019t clear, while most normal AR-15 triggers (and binaries, on my take) still work.<\/p>\n<h2>The bolt is the whole plot<\/h2>\n<p>This is where I think Ruger actually earned the name. A lot of small-frame .308 attempts reuse AR-15-ish carriers with bolts that were happier in lower-pressure cartridges. .308 \/ 7.62 NATO pressure is a different job.<\/p>\n<p>On the SFAR, the bolt carrier group is a clean-sheet design: bolt and barrel extension CNC\u2019d from high-strength \u201csuper alloy\u201d steel (pitched as tougher than mil-spec Carpenter 158), plus a <strong>titanium firing pin<\/strong> and <strong>dual ejectors<\/strong>. You can\u2019t just parts-bin this the way you build a normal AR-15 \u2014 and that\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n<h2>Trigger, furniture, sling points<\/h2>\n<p>Trigger is the <strong>Ruger Elite 452<\/strong> \u2014 ~<strong>4.5 lb two-stage<\/strong>, one of my favorite factory AR triggers for hunting and \u201cgood enough\u201d precision. Want it lighter? A cheap lightweight spring kit can drop it toward the ~1.5 lb neighborhood without buying a whole new trigger. Furniture: <strong>Magpul MOE<\/strong> grip and <strong>MOE SL<\/strong> stock (solid lock-up on the SL). Plenty of sling real estate \u2014 loops, QD on stock and rail, plus a QD plate on the rear of the receiver for single-point setups.<\/p>\n<h2>Range impressions<\/h2>\n<p>Unsuppressed with the Boomer brake: recoil was very manageable \u2014 more than a .223 AR, closer to a well-braked 6.5 Grendel \/ 7.62&times;39 vibe than a classic heavy AR-10 \u201cboat anchor cycling.\u201d The gun cycles <em>quick<\/em>; the smaller reciprocating mass vs a full-size AR-10 is the whole feel. Through the first ~60 rounds on tape (including handloads), zero hiccups unsuppressed.<\/p>\n<p>Suppressed: gas setting <strong>1<\/strong> was underpowered with soft, uncrimped handloads and got dirty fast; bumping to setting <strong>2<\/strong> and switching to factory <strong>M80-style<\/strong> ammo cleaned the reliability picture up. Lesson from the video: tune the click gas for <em>your<\/em> ammo + can combo \u2014 don\u2019t assume setting 1 is magic.<\/p>\n<p>Distance work: steel from ~200 out past <strong>700<\/strong> with mixed factory and handloads. It\u2019s not a PRS chassis gun \u2014 the stock is still AR furniture \u2014 but as an entry semi-auto that will comfortably ring steel past 700, it did the job on tape.<\/p>\n<h2>Bottom line \u2014 Corvette with a base stereo<\/h2>\n<p>My analogy on camera: flagship where it matters (bolt, gas, brake, trigger bones, rail concept), then straight to the parts bin for the cheap radio \u2014 basic AR lower parts kit energy, no sights in the box. Easy upgrades (ARCA, better grip, a stock that loves a scope) are cheap compared to the hard engineering Ruger already did.<\/p>\n<p>For gun owners: a very solid <strong>hunting<\/strong> .308 AR or <strong>entry-level semi-auto precision<\/strong> rifle you can actually run past 700.
