Ammo as taped:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wolf Military Classic<\/strong> 100 gr FMJ \u2014 chronograph roughly <strong>~2,750 fps<\/strong> (the \u201ccheap stuff\u201d baseline)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hornady Black<\/strong> 6.5 Grendel <strong>123 gr<\/strong> \u2014 remaining factory stash for groups \/ break-in<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What showed up on paper: even mid break-in, with a hot barrel, a five-and-a-half-pound-feeling trigger feel at one point in the session, a \u201ccrappy bipod,\u201d and mixed factory ammo, the Hornady Black printed a <strong>same-hole \/ stacked<\/strong> impression that left me genuinely impressed. Potential was obvious before any load development.<\/p>\n<p>Handling notes as taped:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Action is not the slickest out of the box with AR mags and a hold-open \u2014 <strong>run the bolt like you mean it<\/strong> (think old military rifles), especially with a 70\u00b0 throw; it should smooth with rounds<\/li>\n<li>Wishlist: threaded extended bolt handle \/ knob (Anarchy Outdoors called out) for leverage<\/li>\n<li>Tang safety is a win vs side safeties that eat thumbs on some other budget actions<\/li>\n<li>Wish list vs hunting carry: a true three-position \u201cbolt locked\u201d safety would be nicer in the woods<\/li>\n<li>No brake on 6.5 Grendel: recoil is very manageable for hunting; for long sessions \/ longer ranges, add a brake<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>Since introduction, the Ruger American earned the \u201csub-MOA capable\u201d reputation that eventually showed up on Ruger\u2019s own spec notes. Why it can succeed the Remington 700 as the value recommendation: three-lug \/ 70\u00b0 manufacturing that still shoots, bedding blocks that let a polymer stock behave, and cold hammer-forged barrels that punch above the price.<\/p>\n<p>Is it the smoothest action, nicest trigger, or nicest stock you can buy? <strong>No<\/strong> \u2014 and you can upgrade those. None of that kept this Predator from being an accurate, reliable, affordable bolt gun in a chambering that is not always easy to find elsewhere. If you want a bolt action in a unique caliber like 6.5 Grendel without custom money, this platform was (and often still is) one of the few sane factory answers.<\/p>\n<p>Next on that rifle in the series: accessories to make it shine.
