The Max-9 is a double-stack 9mm carry pistol \u2014 in the video we call out capacity as either <strong>13 or 11 rounds<\/strong> depending on the magazine (12- or 10-round mags), with an <strong>MSRP just under $500<\/strong> and a street price a bit below that. Full pistol rundown is in the earlier Max-9 video on the channel playlist.<\/p>\n<p>The big carry-optics win: you can run a red dot <strong>and keep the rear iron<\/strong>, and you can <strong>co-witness<\/strong> the dot with those sights. The slide is cut for the <strong>JPoint \/ Shield<\/strong> footprint \u2014 the smaller subcompact pattern, not your typical Trijicon RMR, Docter, or larger Vortex-style footprints.<\/p>\n<h2>Dots that fit: Romeo Zero and Swampfox Sentinel<\/h2>\n<p>Two favorites in that footprint from the video:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sig Romeo Zero<\/strong> \u2014 already shown in earlier Max-9 clips<\/li>\n<li><strong>Swampfox Sentinel<\/strong> \u2014 the one we install here; also offered in a fully automatic brightness model that adjusts to ambient light<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both Swampfox options in that lineup were called out with a nice <strong>3 MOA<\/strong> dot and solid build quality for the class. (Separate deep-dive videos on those dots were planned and may already be linked on the channel if you\u2019re watching later.)<\/p>\n<h2>Tools and what\u2019s in the box<\/h2>\n<p>Out of the box the Max-9 ships with a <strong>cover plate<\/strong> over the optic cut. Important: when you mount a red dot on this gun, you do <strong>not<\/strong> remove the rear sight \u2014 the plate is just the cover.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plate is held by <strong>two Torx T10<\/strong> bolts<\/li>\n<li>Ruger includes the needed wrenches<\/li>\n<li>I highly recommend a real toolkit \u2014 in the video that\u2019s the <strong>Fix It Sticks<\/strong> all-in-one torque driver kit (common bits, well made; Squat Squad members get a special discount via the join path)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Install steps (Shield \/ JPoint pattern)<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Remove the cover plate<\/strong> \u2014 back out the two T10s (righty-tighty \/ lefty-loosey), don\u2019t lose the screws, set the plate aside or back in the box.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drop in the two pins<\/strong> \u2014 inside the box is a small envelope with two pins. Seat them in the <strong>rear two corners<\/strong> of the cut. They should drop in with <strong>no force<\/strong>. Those pins help anchor the optic. They work with most JPoint\/Shield-cut sights.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Holosun exception:<\/strong> if you\u2019re using the <strong>HS407K \/ HS507K<\/strong>, you do <strong>not<\/strong> use those two pins \u2014 leave them with the packaging. Once the pins are in for a Shield-pattern optic, you can leave them even if you pull the optic later and put the cover back on (unless you\u2019re switching to those Holosuns).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wipe oil<\/strong> off the top of the slide so it doesn\u2019t migrate into the optic \u2014 especially important on bottom-battery designs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Battery + dry fit<\/strong> \u2014 install the battery first if it feeds from the bottom, then dry-fit the optic so it sits snug. The Sentinel in the video came with a real battery cover plate (not just a sticker).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bolts<\/strong> \u2014 the gun is threaded for the common <strong>M4 \u00d7 0.7 mm<\/strong> pattern that ships with most of these dots (true for both the Romeo Zero and the Sentinel). Thread them in first; don\u2019t final-torque yet. Swampfox also sells a bolt kit with a variety of lengths if you need options.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Torque, Loctite, and not wrecking the optic<\/h2>\n<p>Wrong torque is how dots lose zero \u2014 or get damaged. Too loose and point of aim walks; too tight and you can crack boards \/ electronics in these tiny footprints. Specs differ by optic. From the video:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sig Romeo Zero:<\/strong> about <strong>9 in-lbs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Swampfox Sentinel:<\/strong> about <strong>15 in-lbs<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s why a small torque driver matters. The Fix It Sticks all-in-one mini driver called out here measures roughly <strong>6\u201325 in-lbs<\/strong> (versus their larger orange driver at 15\u201365), which is the right window for pistol dots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blue (non-permanent) Loctite<\/strong> is fine <em>per the Ruger manual<\/em> to help screws resist walking under recoil \u2014 but some optic makers explicitly say not to use it, so follow the optic maker when they conflict. If bolts bottom out before the optic is snug, pull them, file a little length off, or find shorter screws \u2014 don\u2019t just keep cranking.<\/p>\n<h2>Co-witness, confirm zero, and going back to irons<\/h2>\n<p>Power the optic on, then adjust so you can <strong>co-witness<\/strong> with the factory irons \u2014 a solid starting point, and something you can\u2019t do on every optics-ready carry gun. In the video the Sentinel\u2019s window looked big once it was up. Then get to the range: shoot groups off a bag and fine-tune. Periodically re-check bolt torque (especially if you skipped Loctite) \u2014 a lot of \u201cmy red dot lost zero\u201d complaints are just loose mounts.<\/p>\n<p>Side note from the video: if you\u2019re constantly drifting irons on every gun, look at technique before blaming the hardware.<\/p>\n<p>Want irons only again? Put the stock cover plate back on with the original T10s and torque those to about <strong>26 in-lbs<\/strong> as called out in the clip.<\/p>\n<h2>Bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s the Max-9 red-dot path: Shield\/JPoint footprint, keep the rear sight, co-witness if you want, torque to the optic\u2019s spec, and don\u2019t skip the pins unless you\u2019re on those Holosun K models. Process is similar on a lot of other optics-ready pistols once you know the footprint and torque.
