The barreled actions are basically the same family; the packaging is what changes. The RPR is the precision-packaged cousin. If you already own an American \u2014 or you like the value \u2014 a handful of parts can make it feel and run a lot closer to a chassis gun without starting over.<\/p>\n<h2>Must-have: Anarchy threaded bolt handle + Dragonscale knob<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike the RPR, Americans ship with a one-piece bolt. The factory handle works, but it\u2019s small \u2014 easy to smack a big scope, and you lose leverage when cycling hard. Anarchy Outdoors\u2019 threaded bolt handle is machined from <strong>17-4 stainless<\/strong>, right- or left-hand, stainless or black nitride, with <strong>5\/16-24<\/strong> threads for common knobs. On mine: their red <strong>Dragonscale<\/strong> knob. Together they make bolt work noticeably easier.<\/p>\n<h2>Must-have: aluminum (or titanium) bolt shroud<\/h2>\n<p>Factory Americans use a plastic rear bolt shroud that can feel loose and get beat up. Anarchy\u2019s replacement shrouds are in-house, precise-fitting aluminum (red or black anodized) or titanium \u2014 tighter tolerances, smoother cycle, and they look the part.<\/p>\n<h2>Must-have: a real muzzle brake<\/h2>\n<p>RPRs come with brakes; most Americans don\u2019t. Predator and Ranch barrels are often threaded, so you can run a brake or a can. One of my favorites for mid-range calibers is the self-timing <strong>Jet Blast<\/strong> from <strong>Patriot Valley Arms<\/strong> \u2014 effective, hand-tight (no shims), and usually more wallet-friendly than big-name APA brakes.<\/p>\n<h2>Nice-to-have: Sharps Bros Heatseeker chassis (or a hunting chassis)<\/h2>\n<p>You don\u2019t need a chassis to shoot well on an American, but modularity and ergonomics are the win: AR-15 stock and grip of choice, plus M-LOK for bipods and slings. In this video the Heatseeker is my pick for a capable, good-looking American chassis. On the build shown: FAB spike bipod, Anarchy <strong>Penguin<\/strong> grip, MDT Skeleton Carbine stock, and Long Shot\u2019s adjustable bag rider. Prefer something lighter for hunting? Brownells\u2019 <strong>BRN-180<\/strong> chassis (MDT) is called out as a one-piece open-forend hunting option. Deeper Heatseeker dive: <a href=\"https:\/\/slavguns.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/01\/sharps-bros-heatseeker-chassis-ruger-american\/\">our Heatseeker article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Nice-to-have: Timney 641C trigger<\/h2>\n<p>American and RPR both use Ruger\u2019s Marksman bladed trigger \u2014 adjustable about <strong>3\u20135 lb<\/strong>, fine for hunting, not ideal for precision. Timney\u2019s <strong>641C<\/strong> is a drop-in curved trigger, user-adjustable about <strong>1.5\u20134 lb<\/strong>, with creep and overtravel adjustment.<\/p>\n<h2>Nice-to-have (long range): Anarchy 30\/40 MOA canted base<\/h2>\n<p>Most shooters won\u2019t need this. Factory Americans are flat-railed, so elevation comes from the scope \u2014 often enough into the ~800-yard neighborhood depending on glass. Past that, Anarchy\u2019s <strong>30 or 40 MOA<\/strong> bases (7075-T6, hard-coat anodized) buy you more usable elevation. Heads-up from the video: Ruger torques factory base screws hard \u2014 keep spare <strong>Torx T10<\/strong> bits handy; you may destroy the old base getting it off.<\/p>\n<h2>Bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>A bone-stock American doesn\u2019t look like an RPR \u2014 and it doesn\u2019t have to. With bolt work, a shroud, a brake, and the optional chassis \/ Timney \/ canted base stack, you can make it feel and function like a purpose-built precision setup, sometimes more comfortably than the factory RPR package.
