Today we\u2019re taking a deep dive into the <strong>FAB AR-Podium<\/strong>: what it is, what it does, and whether you should pick one up. More gear I use: <a href=\"https:\/\/slav.li\/amazon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SlavGuns Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What problem was the Podium built to solve?<\/h2>\n<p>The AR-Podium is not a photo stand for your gun (though it does that too). It\u2019s an extension of the original <strong>Podium bipod<\/strong> FAB built for the <strong>IWI Tavor<\/strong> for the Israeli Defense Forces. When the IDF moved from M16s to Tavors, the bullpup layout and short front rail left almost nowhere for a traditional bipod \u2014 and even if you mounted one up front, the legs often weren\u2019t tall enough for useful elevation. The Podium answered that by attaching under the pistol grip instead of hanging weight off the muzzle.<\/p>\n<p>That idea worked so well on the Tavor that the next question was obvious: can you do the same thing on an <strong>AR-15<\/strong> (and AKs)? On AKs it\u2019s an easy sell \u2014 rail space is scarce. On ARs you have options, so the real question is whether the AR-Podium is a solution looking for a problem, or something you actually need.<\/p>\n<h2>What you get: grip + bipod in one package<\/h2>\n<p>For the AR-15, FAB sells the AR-Podium as a <strong>pistol grip plus bipod module<\/strong>. Together they give you a stable bipod platform <em>without<\/em> adding weight to the front of the gun. The kit has four pieces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The FAB ergonomic pistol grip (usable by itself without the bipod)<\/li>\n<li>The bipod \/ podium module<\/li>\n<li>Two support brackets that wrap the magwell and tie into the front of the podium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Install is straightforward \u2014 no gunsmithing. Swap your grip for the FAB grip, pin and bolt the podium module under it, click the two magwell support frames in place, and tighten the three bolts. About <strong>10 minutes<\/strong> start to finish.<\/p>\n<h2>How you actually use it<\/h2>\n<p>Standing or run-and-gun, the rifle behaves like a normal AR. Where it helps is <strong>bench<\/strong> and <strong>prone<\/strong>. There\u2019s a button behind the grip \u2014 press it and both legs spring out. You can rest the gun and stop holding it up.<\/p>\n<p>The big advantage over a front bipod is the <strong>fulcrum<\/strong>. Because the support sits closer to the center of the gun, you get a much bigger range of motion for steep uphill or downhill angles. Traditional bipods are often only around ~11 inches tall; I\u2019ve hit that limit on my own range shooting targets at ~330 yards up a hillside and ended up stacking blocks under a front bipod. With the AR-Podium shifted back, that height fight mostly goes away \u2014 which is also why the original Tavor Podium was useful off car hoods and rooftops at steep angles.<\/p>\n<p>Deploying both legs with one button behind the grip means you don\u2019t reach forward, twist legs down, then extend them. You can keep your eye on the target while you deploy. And because you\u2019re not hanging a bipod on the muzzle, you don\u2019t have to add a heavier stock just to rebalance a nose-heavy precision AR.<\/p>\n<h2>Tradeoffs you should know about<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Reloads with legs deployed<\/strong> take practice. Mag changes with the legs stowed feel normal. With the bipod open \u2014 especially shorter 20-round Duramags or 10-round mags \u2014 you\u2019re working the mag between the legs. Standard 30-round AR mags are easier. Counterpoint: legs are usually only out when you\u2019re prone or on a surface, so your reload angle is different anyway. Just plan on it feeling different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magwell hand hold.<\/strong> The support brackets stick out a bit, so wrapping your support hand around the magwell is less comfortable. Behind a bench or prone, your support hand should be back on the stock anyway. For standing \/ run-and-gun, train a C-clamp or add a vertical\/angled foregrip instead of choking the magwell.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOther firearms.\u201d<\/strong> If you run an Other with a brace and a required vertical foregrip on a short rail, there\u2019s often no room for a front bipod. The AR-Podium lets you keep the VFG and still get a bipod that lives under the grip \u2014 that\u2019s one of the cleanest use cases.<\/p>\n<h2>Should it replace your bipod?<\/h2>\n<p>I first saw this at SHOT Show years ago when a rep stood on a rifle supported only by the buttstock and the Podium. Cool demo. Working it on shorter \u201cOther\u201d builds and my 6mm ARC was the real test \u2014 and I\u2019m more impressed than I thought I\u2019d be. Build quality is solid polymer in the Magpul-ish class FAB is known for.<\/p>\n<p>Should it replace a traditional bipod? <strong>Consider it, yes. Replace a high-end bipod? Maybe.<\/strong> If you have an 18\u201324&#8243; precision gun and you\u2019re already on a $200\u2013$300 fully adjustable bipod, this probably doesn\u2019t displace that setup. If most of your shooting is casual \/ bench work and you don\u2019t want to spend $250\u2013$300 on a bipod, bag rider, and sandbag stack, the AR-Podium is a big upgrade for the money and a stable platform you\u2019ll actually use. It\u2019s also a no-brainer anytime you need to shoot off obstacles or at extreme angles.<\/p>\n<p>Bonus: even if you don\u2019t need the bipod right now, the FAB grip by itself feels good \u2014 tactile dots front and back \u2014 and you can bolt the podium module back on in a few minutes later. Own multiple ARs? Buy one AR-Podium and move it between guns so the cost spreads across the safe.<\/p>\n<h2>Bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>When I shot this video, the AR-Podium was running around <strong>$125<\/strong> in the U.S. \u2014 less than FAB\u2019s spike bipod I also like. Subtract the $25\u2013$40 you\u2019d spend on a grip anyway and you\u2019re really asking whether ~$80 more is worth a quick-deploy bipod under the gun. For me: yes.
