Most gun owners compare the AR-15 to Legos. Unfortunately, when I filmed this, Legos were out of stock everywhere. But there&#8217;s another design that&#8217;s just as easy to put together, fun for all ages, and even cheaper to shoot: the <strong>Ruger 10\/22<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this one I&#8217;m talking about the 10\/22 platform, the clones and variants out there, and my own &#8220;Slav Designs&#8221; 10\/22 clone built from off-the-shelf parts: an <strong>Azimuth Technology AZTP-22<\/strong> barreled action, a <strong>FAB Defense 10\/22 stock<\/strong>, a <strong>Ruger BX trigger<\/strong>, a few <strong>TandemKross<\/strong> small parts, and a <strong>Styrka S5 4.5-14&#215;44<\/strong> on top. No gunsmithing skills required. If you can put together a Lego set, you can put together one of these.<\/p>\n<p><em>Disclosure: Parts were provided by Azimuth Technology, FAB, Ruger, and TandemKross for testing and evaluation. The companies did not see the video before it was published.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Heads-up: I filmed this in summer 2020. Product availability and pricing have likely changed since, so check current options before you buy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Before You Buy a Ruger 10\/22, WATCH THIS!\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ha1tm7Wx9bc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>TL;DR<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The 10\/22 has sold millions of copies over its 50-plus-year history and is a fun, reliable, adaptable platform for training, plinking, teaching, small game, and collecting.<\/li>\n<li>You can think of it as three groups: the <strong>receiver<\/strong> (with the bolt), the <strong>barrel<\/strong>, and the <strong>trigger pack<\/strong>, plus the stock or chassis of your choice.<\/li>\n<li>My build: <strong>Azimuth AZTP-22<\/strong> barreled action with matched bolt, <strong>416R stainless<\/strong> barrel, <strong>Sport<\/strong> chamber, <strong>1\/2&#215;28<\/strong> threads, <strong>11-degree target crown<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FAB 10\/22 stock<\/strong> with a standard pistol grip, adjustable comb, and folding adapter. With a bull barrel you get a fully free-floated barrel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ruger BX trigger<\/strong> takes the pull from around 6 lb down to a clean, crisp 2.5 to 3 lb.<\/li>\n<li>The gun was far more accurate than I was off my setup that day. Next time I&#8217;m bringing a tripod and a rear bag.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Clones and variants<\/h2>\n<p>Because the 10\/22 is so popular, a lot of companies other than Ruger make variants of it. The most successful commercial one is a gun I covered before, the <a href=\"https:\/\/slavguns.com\/index.php\/2019\/05\/15\/thompson-center-tcr-22-ruger-10-22-copy\/\">Thompson Center TCR-22<\/a>. For precision-focused variants, you can look at models from <strong>Magnum Research<\/strong> or <strong>Volquartsen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But you can also build your own with a few off-the-shelf parts. That was the inspiration for this video: piece together a nice firearm from production parts with no gunsmithing.<\/p>\n<h2>How a 10\/22 goes together<\/h2>\n<p>The receiver is the serialized part of the firearm. The bolt goes into the receiver, the barrel attaches to the receiver with a <strong>V-block<\/strong>, and the complete trigger pack mates up to the receiver with <strong>two pins<\/strong>. Then you take that barreled action, drop it into your choice of stock or chassis, and you&#8217;re done.<\/p>\n<p>Next to the AR-15, the 10\/22 has the largest aftermarket for parts and accessories. Whether you want a precision .22 or a tactical-looking blaster, there are parts for that.<\/p>\n<h2>The plan (and the delayed chassis)<\/h2>\n<p>I wanted a precision-focused semi-auto 10\/22 in a functional chassis. After seeing one at SHOT Show I was hooked. Unfortunately that chassis got delayed (surprise, surprise), so I modified the mission statement and went with a build that was both <strong>accurate and functional<\/strong>. That&#8217;s what we have here.<\/p>\n<h2>Azimuth AZTP-22 barreled action<\/h2>\n<p>At the core of the rifle is a complete barreled action from <strong>Azimuth Technology<\/strong>, an aerospace company that decided to apply their craft to precision rimfires. Azimuth offers individual barrels and barreled actions, with or without a matched bolt. I went with the matched bolt and barrel.<\/p>\n<p>The 10\/22 is a great design, but there&#8217;s room for improvement, and Azimuth built some of that into the AZTP-22:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An <strong>integrated Picatinny rail<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>dual internal rail design<\/strong> to keep the bolt from canting<\/li>\n<li>Receivers machined to tolerances as tight as <strong>five ten-thousandths of an inch<\/strong> (0.0005&#8243;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Barrels come in <strong>416R stainless<\/strong> or <strong>4150 chrome vanadium<\/strong> steel, in <strong>Sport<\/strong> or <strong>Bentz<\/strong> chambers. Mine is the 416R with the Sport chamber. It&#8217;s not as tight as the Bentz, but I wanted flexibility with ammo choices. What makes these barrels unique is a proprietary honing and polishing process that uses water instead of hand lapping, which is significantly more labor intensive. The barrel is threaded <strong>1\/2&#215;28<\/strong> and comes with an <strong>11-degree target crown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>FAB Defense 10\/22 stock<\/h2>\n<p>The barreled action sits in the <strong>FAB 10\/22 stock<\/strong>. It comes in a number of variants, and I went with the basic model. It&#8217;s made of rigid polymer and feels pretty sturdy. The two main features for me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>standard pistol grip<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>An <strong>adjustable comb height<\/strong>, which makes it easy to get a good view through the scope, especially with a magnified optic on top<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a <strong>folding adapter<\/strong>. It&#8217;s easy to manipulate, and when folded it stays in place. You can actually operate the gun with the stock folded.<\/p>\n<p>The stock works with both <strong>bull and standard profile<\/strong> barrels. With a standard thin barrel you use an insert underneath. With a bull barrel like mine, you take that insert out, and that gets you a <strong>fully free-floated barrel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Ruger BX trigger<\/h2>\n<p>For the trigger I went with what works: the <strong>Ruger BX trigger<\/strong>. It takes the pull from around <strong>6 lb<\/strong> on a standard trigger down to a nice, clean, crisp <strong>2.5 to 3 lb<\/strong>. That&#8217;s nice enough for an experienced precision shooter, but not so light that a less experienced shooter is going to have a negligent discharge.<\/p>\n<p>The nice part about 10\/22 trigger upgrades is that you don&#8217;t mess with hammer springs and sears. Remove the two pins, swap the entire trigger module, and put the pins back in. It&#8217;s even simpler than replacing a trigger on most AR-15s.<\/p>\n<h2>TandemKross small parts<\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need three small parts to finish it, all from <strong>TandemKross<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shock Block:<\/strong> a bolt buffer that goes inside the receiver and acts like a shock absorber, so the bolt isn&#8217;t beating itself against the receiver.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Receiver KrossPins:<\/strong> upgraded stainless pins for the trigger pack and the magazine release. The factory pins are okay, but if you take the gun apart for cleaning they tend to pop out. The KrossPins have a ball detent that holds them in place.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rimfire Edge Twister takedown knob:<\/strong> TandemKross doesn&#8217;t make this one, but they&#8217;re a great place to buy it. It&#8217;s an oversized takedown screw that holds the receiver to the stock. The factory one needs a tool. With the Twister you can use a flathead screwdriver or a quarter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Styrka S5 4.5-14&#215;44 on top<\/h2>\n<p>Topping it off is the <strong>Styrka S5 4.5-14&#215;44<\/strong> with the BDC reticle. Very nice lenses and coatings, terrific image quality, and adjustable parallax down to as close as <strong>20 yards<\/strong>, which matters on a rimfire I plan to take out to longer ranges. The scope is waterproof and nitrogen purged. I doubt this .22 will give it anywhere near that kind of abuse. Honestly, the gun is far more accurate than I was that day. I could see the whole thing move just trying to get a grip on it off my setup, so next time I&#8217;m definitely bringing a tripod and a rear bag. Still, the action is phenomenal. (I also apparently can&#8217;t count shots. Literally.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m looking forward to seeing what it does with proper match ammo, and to trying the Bentz-chambered variant in the precision chassis I originally had in mind.<\/p>\n<h2>Bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>10\/22s are stupid fun. After shooting a lot of large-caliber precision rifles, it&#8217;s nice to come out to the range and just blast away with cheap .22s. If you want a collectible, Ruger&#8217;s Collector&#8217;s Series is the way to go. But if you want a fun, accurate, purpose-built gun and you have basic skills to put something together, I highly recommend building one. I&#8217;m quite impressed with the parts I picked and really enjoy the enhanced action on the Azimuth 10\/22.<\/p>\n<p>Want to see a fancier factory take?
