Gun owners looking for an accurate rifle on a budget already know you can get a sub-MOA bolt gun in something like 6.5 Creedmoor for under $500. But what if you want an accurate semi-auto AR-15 that can stretch toward a thousand yards without emptying the wallet? In this one I&#8217;m looking at the <strong>PSA 20&#8243; rifle-length 6.5 Grendel complete upper<\/strong> \u2014 model <strong>5165448709<\/strong> \u2014 and asking a simple question: can you get that for around five hundred bucks?<\/p>\n<p>Spoiler: with Hornady Black 123gr ELD Match and a ~4.5 lb Geissele on a Spikes lower, I squeezed out multiple sub-MOA three-shot groups at about 100 yards, including a <strong>0.434&#8243;<\/strong> group. Not bad for a complete upper that was under $500 when I filmed this.<\/p>\n<p><em>Disclosure: The upper was provided by Palmetto State Armory for testing and evaluation. PSA did not see the video prior to publication.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Heads-up: I filmed this around July 2020 (model <strong>5165448709<\/strong> \u2014 PSA 20&#8243; Rifle-Length 6.5 Grendel 1\/8 Stainless Steel, 15&#8243; Lightweight M-Lok Upper with BCG &amp; CH). At filming the complete upper was just under $500; as of this write-up PSA still lists that SKU around <strong>$380<\/strong>. Gear I use: <a href=\"https:\/\/slav.li\/amazon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slav.li\/amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>TL;DR<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>20&#8243; 416R stainless<\/strong> barrel, <strong>1:8 twist<\/strong>, rifle-length gas, adjustable gas block, 5\/8\u00d724 with a stock A2 flash hider.<\/li>\n<li>Forged <strong>7075-T6<\/strong> upper, hardcoat anodized, forward assist + dust cover, <strong>15&#8243; lightweight M-Lok<\/strong> rail.<\/li>\n<li>Complete with BCG &amp; charging handle: <strong>9310<\/strong> bolt (shot-peened, gas key hardened to USGI), <strong>8620<\/strong> nitride carrier \u2014 Type 2 Grendel bolt face.<\/li>\n<li>Ammo: Hornady Black <strong>123gr ELD Match<\/strong> ~<strong>2500 fps<\/strong> from this 20&#8243;.<\/li>\n<li>Groups at ~100 yd: multiple sub-MOA three-shots, best <strong>0.434&#8243;<\/strong>; easy hits on 8&#8243; steel at <strong>330 yd<\/strong> even with a heavy trigger.<\/li>\n<li>Filming-day price: just under <strong>$500<\/strong> for the complete upper. Still a bargain if the SKU is around that range today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why 6.5 Grendel on an AR-15?<\/h2>\n<p>.223 \/ 5.56 was built around lighter bullets at higher velocity. Fine out to maybe 600 yards; past that the light projectiles start falling apart on energy and wind. You can load longer\/heavier, but magazine length becomes the wall.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why cartridges like <strong>224 Valkyrie<\/strong> and <strong>6.5 Grendel<\/strong> showed up \u2014 AR-15-sized platforms meant to stay effective further out. Valkyrie had a messy launch (twist\/projectile chaos); Grendel is the more popular, fast-growing option. Think of it as a <strong>7.62\u00d739<\/strong> case necked down to a more efficient 6.5 mm projectile that still feeds from an AR mag (typically ~20 rounds where you&#8217;d otherwise get 30 of .223). Capacity is the trade-off; performance at distance is the payoff.<\/p>\n<p>I also covered a homebuilt Grendel path here: <a href=\"https:\/\/slavguns.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/06\/building-a-6-5-grendel-other-firearm\/\">Building a 6.5 Grendel (Other Firearm)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s in the PSA complete upper<\/h2>\n<p>PSA offers 6.5 Grendel uppers in 12&#8243;, 18&#8243;, and 20&#8243; with a few handguard options. I went <strong>20&#8243;<\/strong> with the lightweight rail \u2014 I already had a lower and preferred to pick my own stock.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Barrel:<\/strong> 20&#8243; 416R stainless, 1:8 twist (good for heavier bullets past the usual 120\u2013123gr factory loads), rifle-length gas, low-profile adjustable gas block (handy if you ever run suppressed).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Muzzle:<\/strong> 5\/8\u00d724, stock A2 flash hider \u2014 PSA saves money here and lets you pick a brake, flash hider, or can of your choice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Receiver \/ rail:<\/strong> Mil-spec forged 7075-T6, hardcoat anodized, forward assist and dust cover, 15&#8243; lightweight M-Lok free-float.<\/li>\n<li><strong>BCG:<\/strong> Ships complete. 9310 bolt, shot-peened, gas key hardened to USGI specs; 8620 carrier, nitride. Important: original Grendel used a Type 1 (7.62\u00d739-style) bolt face; SAAMI-spec is <strong>Type 2<\/strong> with a slightly different depth. Most modern Grendel is Type 2 \u2014 if you&#8217;re mixing barrel and bolt from different sources, match the type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>My test setup<\/h2>\n<p>Only modification to the upper itself: a <strong>Havoc Tactical<\/strong> deflector brake (stealth camo). It kicks brass toward ~2 o&#8217;clock instead of dumping it at 4, and more importantly for Grendel reloaders it keeps necks from getting beaten up on the ejector \u2014 brass necks looked clean and reload-ready.<\/p>\n<p>Lower \/ furniture: Spikes lower, Geissele trigger (~<strong>4.5 lb<\/strong> on this one \u2014 clean wall, heavy break), Ergo grip, <strong>FAB RAPS<\/strong> stock, Long Shot Precision ABR bag rider, Atlas BT46 bipod.<\/p>\n<p>Optic: <strong>Styrka S7 2.5-15\u00d750 BDC SFP<\/strong> \u2014 solid glass for hunters or folks entering precision. Full review: <a href=\"https:\/\/slavguns.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/08\/styrka-s7-2-5-15x50-hunting-scope-review\/\">Styrka S7 2.5-15\u00d750 hunting scope review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mags: brand-new (at the time) polymer <strong>Amend2<\/strong> 10-round 6.5 Grendel mags \u2014 first polymer Grendel mags I had seen; they look like a 20-rounder but hold 10.<\/p>\n<h2>Range time<\/h2>\n<p>Goalposts going in: ~1.5 MOA = good deal; 1 MOA or better = great deal. Ammo was Hornady Black 123gr ELD Match. Velocity was right around <strong>2500 fps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>First impressions: recoil is more than .223, nowhere near 7.62\u00d739. Balance with the lightweight rail, RAPS, bipod, and bag rider felt excellent \u2014 center of gravity sits nicely over the bipod. Brass from the deflector brake landed clean; necks looked perfect for reloading.<\/p>\n<p>The Geissele at ~4.5 lb was the limiting factor for precision. Three-shot groups were easy to get tight; five-shot groups were harder because of that heavy break. Still, I got multiple <strong>sub-MOA<\/strong> three-shot groups at about 100 yards, including one at <strong>0.434&#8243;<\/strong> (sub-0.5 MOA). And even as configured, hitting an <strong>8&#8243; steel at 330 yards<\/strong> was no problem.<\/p>\n<p>Can you squat it? Yes \u2014 even with a suppressor on, the balance shifts a bit but it&#8217;s absolutely squat-able.<\/p>\n<h2>Bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>Palmetto State Armory&#8217;s 20&#8243; 6.5 Grendel complete upper is a terrific value entry into AR-15 precision. Sub-MOA three-shots with factory Hornady Black, brass that survives for reloading with a decent deflector brake, and a complete package (barrel, rail, BCG, CH) that was under $500 when I shot it \u2014 and still lists in that ballpark.<\/p>\n<p>The trigger on my Spikes lower was the weak link for five-shot groups. In the follow-up I planned to swap to something more precision-oriented (Jump Tech class) and push groups at 300+ yards.
