FAB RAPS Stock First Look: A Quicker, Cheaper Magpul PRS Alternative for Precision ARs

Hey there, Squat Squad, and welcome back to Slav Guns. Today we’re looking at a stock that fixes two of the most annoying problems with a precision AR-15: a gun that’s too front heavy, and a scope that sits too high for a proper cheek weld. It’s the RAPS from FAB, the company formerly known as FAB Defense.

RAPS stands for Rapid Adjustable Precision Stock, and the pitch is simple: length of pull and comb height adjustment like a Magpul PRS, but with one quick latch instead of slow knob wheels, and for less money.

The RAPS stock was provided by USIQ for testing & evaluation. USIQ did not see the video prior to publication.

Quick note on what this is: it’s a hands-on first look and walkthrough of the stock’s features, install and fit. It’s not a range test, so there are no groups or accuracy claims here.

TL;DR

  • What it is: the FAB RAPS (model FX-RAPS), a polymer precision stock with adjustable length of pull and comb height.
  • The big feature: a one-handed latch that unlocks the comb and springs the buttstock out to your preset length of pull in one move.
  • Fits: AR-15s, plus bolt guns that take an AR buffer tube. Adapters for rifle-length and mil-spec carbine tubes are included, plus a universal adapter.
  • Extras: ambidextrous latch, QD sling mounts in two positions on both sides, and a hidden Picatinny section underneath for a rear monopod.
  • Gripes: the rail cover is very tough to get off, and my box had no manual.
  • Price: about $175 when I made the video, versus about $250 for a Magpul PRS. Israeli-made with a lifetime warranty.

Why a precision AR needs a different stock

AR pistols and braces have been all the rage, but there are still plenty of states where braces aren’t legal and plenty of shooting disciplines where you need a proper AR carbine with a real stock.

Once you start building a more accurized AR, you run into two problems:

  • Balance: put on a precision upper with a target profile barrel, or anything 18 inches or longer, and the gun gets front heavy. Most AR stocks are too lightweight to balance it out.
  • Cheek weld: add a rifle scope and rings or a mount, and the scope may sit too high for a proper cheek weld. Higher magnification scopes need even more clearance over the front rail.

The go-to fix for years has been the Magpul PRS. It gives you adjustable length of pull and comb height, and it weighs quite a bit more than a typical AR stock, so it does a better job balancing the rifle. The catch is the roughly $250 price tag, and some folks find the knob wheel adjustments a tad slow.

Who is FAB?

FAB doesn’t have Magpul-level name recognition in the US, but the Israeli brand is quite popular in Europe, and in Russia in particular. If you’ve read my FAB AR-Podium bipod grip review or my Ruger 10/22 build with FAB parts, you already know I like their stuff.

My original plan was to put the RAPS on my Ruger Precision Rifle to replace the factory stock. After working with it, I found it feels and works best on an AR platform, so that’s where it lives.

How the one-handed latch works

The RAPS is magic plastic fantastic polymer, designed with the precision shooter in mind. The unique part is the latch system on the side:

  1. Press down on the latch to unlock it.
  2. The buttstock springs out to your preset length of pull, and the comb height adjustment unlocks at the same time.
  3. Raise the cheek pad to your desired height, then lock the latch.

To set the length of pull, there’s a little thumb wheel on the bottom of the stock. Turn it either direction and it moves a pin that limits how far the buttstock can come out. That’s your preset.

To save space, you can collapse both the comb and the length of pull. When you release the latch again, the length of pull returns to your preset distance. The comb height you’ll have to re-raise by hand, so it’s not a perfect memory system, but it’s quick.

Comb height matters most on an AR running a rifle scope, since it sits fairly high. Length of pull adjustment is nice for fitting shooters of all sizes, and for switching between prone and shooting from behind a bench.

The rest of the features

  • Ambidextrous: you can move the locking latch from the right side to the left side.
  • Sling mounts: QD sling mounts in two positions, on both sides of the stock.
  • Bottom rail: a Picatinny section on the bottom, hidden by a plastic cover. Pull the cover to mount a rear monopod, or leave it on for a smooth surface to ride your sandbag.
  • Buffer tube compatibility: includes adapters for rifle-length tubes and mil-spec carbine tubes, plus a universal adapter that may work with other firearms.

What I didn’t love

That bottom rail cover is very tough to remove. I had to pry it off with a knife to get at the rail. I suppose too tight is better than too loose, but bring a tool.

My other pet peeve: for a full-featured stock, there was no manual or paperwork in the box. I don’t know if that was just my demo unit or if they all ship that way. Either way, you can find instructions online, or ask me in the comments.

Install itself gave me no issues. The stock is well made and feels expensive.

Who it’s for

If you’re running a basic AR with a red dot, you probably don’t need this. If you’re building a precision AR with a heavy or long barrel and a real scope on top, and you want adjustable comb and length of pull without paying Magpul PRS money or spinning knobs, the RAPS makes a lot of sense.

For a precision AR you also want a solid rest at the bench. The Caldwell rest and bags I use, plus the rest of my bench gear, are in my Amazon picks. And if you’re tuning a bolt gun instead, check out my adjustable bag rider review and 5 easy Ruger Precision Rifle upgrades.

Bottom line

For around $175 at the time I made the video, the FAB RAPS is a good value: a well made, feature-packed, Israeli-made stock backed by a lifetime warranty, with a one-handed latch that’s quicker than knob wheels. The rail cover fights you and the box could use a manual, but if you need a precision stock for your AR, it’s tough to go wrong with the RAPS.

This one came from my USIQ connection, the same folks behind the Helix6 carbon fiber barrel first look, and there’s more of that tour on the way.
