What’s up Squat Squad, and welcome to Slav Guns. This one is from my SHOT Show 2020 Industry Day at the Range / Media Day coverage at the Angstadt Arms booth. Rich Angstadt walked me through their brand-new MDP-9 — a roller-delayed 9mm AR meant as the next step after their long-running UDP-9 blowback guns. Think solid PCCs that compete in the same conversation as an HK MP5-style 9mm, but in an AR-ish package.
Quick note: this is a booth / Media Day first look with a few range rounds on both the MDP-9 and the UDP-9, not a full test and evaluation. The MSRPs and Q2 shipping talk below are what Angstadt quoted at SHOT Show 2020, so check current pricing and availability before you buy.
TL;DR
- What it is: Angstadt Arms MDP-9, a roller-delayed 9mm AR / PCC — the upgrade path from their UDP-9 straight-blowback guns (those had been out about five or six years at the time).
- Recoil / buffer: Roller delay for much less recoil; no AR-15 buffer tube — the action lives in the upper, with a 1913 Picatinny rail adapter out back for a side folder, telescoping brace, or other stock options.
- Charger: Front-side, non-reciprocating charging handle you can swap left/right.
- Mags / host: Glock magazines; MP5-pattern barrel with a three-lug mount so pistol-caliber suppressors with a 3-lug adapter swap on/off fast.
- Price / ship at the show: Complete gun $2,599 MSRP, complete upper with Picatinny adapter about $1,700 MSRP, targeted for Q2 shipping (SHOT 2020 quotes).
Roller delay instead of straight blowback
Rich framed the MDP-9 as the extension of the brand after the UDP-9. Same company, same 9mm AR idea — but instead of straight blowback, the MDP-9 runs a roller-delayed action so you get much less recoil. That is the whole point of stepping up from a UDP if you already liked the platform and wanted it to shoot softer.
Because the action is contained in the upper, you do not need a classic AR-15 buffer tube. Angstadt replaced that with a 1913 Picatinny rail adapter. The sample on the line had a side folder; Rich said you could also run a telescoping brace or a bunch of other stock options on that rail.
Front charger, Glock mags, upper-only option
The gun is compact, so they moved the charging handle to the front (side charger). It is non-reciprocating — grab it without worrying about it slamming back — and you can swap it left or right. The MDP-9 upper attaches to Angstadt’s standard 9mm lower, and Rich said a whole bunch of other 9mm lowers should be compatible too. So if you already have a 9mm AR lower, you may be able to buy just the upper, drop it on, and go.
They planned to sell it both ways: complete gun or upper only. Magazines are the easy part everyone wants — it takes Glock mags.
Three-lug suppressor host
One detail Rich called out that I care about for a PCC: the barrel end uses an MP5-pattern barrel with a three-lug interface. That is basically the only piece they borrowed from the classic system; the rest is proprietary Angstadt. Plug on a pistol-caliber suppressor with a 3-lug adapter and you get quick on / quick off. He pitched it as a really strong suppressor host for that reason.
Price and availability (SHOT 2020 booth talk)
At the booth, Rich said they were looking at Q2 shipping. Complete gun MSRP was quoted at $2,599 (street a little under that). Complete upper with the Picatinny rail adapter was about $1,700 MSRP. Again — historical Media Day numbers from early 2020. Verify what Angstadt actually sells for now.
Range notes (Media Day, not a full review)
I got time on both the new MDP-9 and the current UDP-9 blowback guns on the Industry Day line. Fun first look, short magazines of 9mm on a Media Day bay — not a controlled T&E. If you want the roller-delayed story in motion, watch the embed above.
Bottom line
If you liked Angstadt’s UDP-9 blowback PCCs and wanted less recoil plus a cleaner rear end for folders/braces, the MDP-9 was their SHOT 2020 answer: roller-delayed 9mm AR, Glock mags, front non-reciprocating charger, and a three-lug suppressor-friendly muzzle. Treat the $2,599 / $1,700 MSRPs as booth history and check current reality. Shopping rests, bags, or range gear? Peek at slav.li/amazon. Want to support the channel? Join here.

Would a roller-delayed Angstadt MDP-9 beat another blowback AR-9 in your safe, or is UDP-style simple still enough? Drop it in the comments.
