Squat Squad, who knew a stock could make this much of a difference? We dropped our Savage 110 Tactical in 6.5 PRC into a Grayboe Flagstaff, and it turned into a different rifle. The Flagstaff is Grayboe’s lightweight polymer hunting stock, and it’s built around the Universal Mini Chassis (UMC), so the same stock can take more than one rifle.
Quick note: this is a first look based on our range time in the short below and Grayboe’s own product pages. A full video review is coming soon to the channel.
Giveaway: we’re giving away a Grayboe Flagstaff or Halo stock plus a UMC of the winner’s choice. It’s free to enter, open to US residents 21+, and runs through November 30, 2026. Enter the Grayboe giveaway here.
TL;DR
- What it is: a traditional-profile hunting stock molded from impact-resistant polymer, built for Grayboe’s Universal Mini Chassis.
- Weight: 2.5 lb with the UMC installed, per Grayboe. Overall length is 31.5″.
- Mags: AICS only. The UMC is the bedding block and the bottom metal in one part.
- Our rifle: Savage 110 Tactical 6.5 PRC. Even as the lighter stock in the lineup, it soaked up recoil and felt solid.
- Catch: right hand only for now, and length-of-pull spacers are still listed as “coming soon.”
Why we put a Savage in it
We’ve already covered the Savage 110 Tactical in 6.5 PRC, and to be fair, the factory stock on the Tactical is a pretty decent one. That’s what surprised us. Dropping the same barreled action into the Flagstaff was still a big upgrade. On the bench it felt more solid, and it soaked up the recoil better than we expected from a stock this light.

How the UMC works
The Flagstaff doesn’t have an inlet cut for one specific rifle. Instead, your barreled action bolts to a Universal Mini Chassis, and then the UMC, with the rifle still on it, bolts into the stock with two screws. According to Grayboe:
- The UMC is T6 6061 billet aluminum, hard anodized matte black or Cerakote, and weighs 14 oz.
- It works as both a bedding block and AICS bottom metal, so your factory bottom metal stays in the drawer.
- Every UMC is the same on the outside, so any rifle with a UMC fits the stock the same way. Short or long action doesn’t matter.
- Grayboe says once you zero your rifle on its UMC, you can pull the rifle out with the UMC still on and it holds zero.
- New action screws ship with every UMC, and Grayboe says to use those, not your factory screws.
Right now Grayboe lists UMC inlets for these actions (right hand only):
- CVA Cascade short and long action
- Howa 1500 short and long action
- Mossberg Patriot short action
- Remington 700 and true 700 clones, short and long action
- Ruger American short and long action
- Savage 110 short and long action
- Tikka T3/T3x short action calibers
- Weatherby Vanguard short and long action
For the mag release, most UMC models give you a choice between a polymer hunting-style lever and an adjustable paddle lever with .080″ of vertical adjustment. Heads up for Savage owners: Grayboe says the hunter lever isn’t available on the Savage UMC, or on the Tikka, Ruger, and Howa/Weatherby models.

Install notes
Grayboe ships the UMC loose so you can see how it works. Its product-page FAQ recommends 45 in-lb for the UMC-to-stock screws and 45 to 65 in-lb for the action screws. The UMC install guide lists slightly different numbers, so check it for your model before you torque anything. On a Ruger American or Mossberg Patriot, the rifle has to be bolted to the UMC and the trigger guard pinned in place before it goes into the stock. And after any swap, fire a confirmation shot or two.

What to know before you buy
- Right hand only. Grayboe says it hopes to offer left-hand UMC stocks in late 2026.
- AICS mags only. Factory or proprietary mags won’t come with you.
- No LOP adjustment yet. The Flagstaff page still lists spacers as coming soon.
- Check your action. If it’s not on the UMC list, it won’t fit yet.
Where the Flagstaff fits in the lineup
The Flagstaff is the lightweight hunting option. Because every UMC stock takes the same chassis, the rifle you hunt with in a Flagstaff can move into Grayboe’s Halo or the precision-focused Core with the same UMC. We tried exactly that in our Grayboe Core article, going from the Flagstaff to the Core in about the time it takes to walk down and change a target.
Our take
The Flagstaff is a simple idea done well: a light, traditional hunting stock with a bedding block and AICS mags built in, and the option to move to another rifle later by buying a UMC instead of a whole new stock. On our Savage 110 Tactical it was a clear upgrade over an already decent factory stock. We’ll go deeper on fit, feel, and the swap in the full video. Check the Grayboe Flagstaff and Universal Mini Chassis pages for current options.
