Squat Squad — NRA 2023 was my first NRA show, and one booth kept popping up in my DMs: Live Free Armory and their Apollo 11. Matt (you’ve seen him on other big-rifle booth walks) walked me through the pitch that made people stop mid-aisle: a double-stack 1911-pattern 9mm aimed at just under a thousand bucks.

The price claim (as stated at the booth)
On camera, Matt said Live Free was coming to market with the Apollo 11 at $979 — just under a grand. In a category where a lot of shooters still hear “double-stack 1911 / 2011-pattern” and assume you’re starting at a few thousand (plus another pile to make it run), that number is the whole conversation.
Live Free’s framing: value-based company, make as much as possible in-house in Melbourne, Florida, and control cost by machining almost everything themselves. On tape, Matt said the main outsources were things like grips, springs, and a couple small pieces — the rest they machine.
Why “how?” mattered in 2023
We were standing near the Springfield Armory booth energy of the moment — Prodigy chatter, early QC stories floating around FFLs — and the old mantra that if you want this platform you have to spend STI/SVI money. Matt’s counter: if you’re a weekly USPSA pro making a living, yeah, you’ll spend more. If you go out once or twice a month to run plates with friends, a solid ~$1k building block is a different lane.
Quality pitch on tape: in-depth QC, CMM sizing checks, operators verifying parts off the CNC. He also mentioned Live Free was already machining on the order of ~5,000 slides a week for other manufacturers — so the Apollo 11 wasn’t their first day touching slides.
Configs on the roadmap (booth timeline)
At NRA 2023 these were still prototypes. Matt walked the planned roll-out:
- Full-size first — ~5" barrel
- Compact — ~4.25" (booth timing: late summer)
- Subcompact — ~3.5" (booth timing: around December)
No bespoke online configurator on that tape — three models, with different Cerakote colors called out at no extra charge. Rails on all of them (light-ready). Barrel design was still in flux: prototypes with a bushing setup, with a possible move toward a bull barrel still “on the drawing board.”
Optics-ready, magazines, caliber
All were described as optics-cut with a plate — not a big multi-footprint adapter ecosystem. Matt’s point: keep the dot low so the sight picture and recoil feel don’t go full “red-dot skyscraper” on a 1911-height gun.
Magazines: standard double-stack 2011-pattern mags — they were going with Checkmate. Caliber on tape: 9mm only at launch (other chamberings maybe later). Matt also said it should handle Plus-P / “9 major”-class abuse if someone insisted — with the usual “I don’t know why you would” energy.
Who it’s for
This booth interview is Live Free arguing you don’t need a $3–4k race gun to enjoy a high-capacity 1911-pattern pistol for casual USPSA, plates, or just having fun. Treat the $979 figure and the 2023 size timeline as booth roadmap — the Apollo 11 has continued evolving since (you’ve even seen LFA Apollo 11 V2 show up in later deal roundups).
