CompExpo 2021 booth interview (~14.5 min) with Greg from Vudoo Gunworks about precision rimfire, the V-22 360 three-lug action, Remington 700 footprint builds, match ammo, and training value versus centerfire. Hey Squat Squad — if you care about long-range and ELR, you already know rimfire precision is not a toy lane anymore. At CompExpo I stopped by one of the most interesting booths on the floor: Vudoo Gunworks, with Greg walking me through what they build for NRL22 / extended-range .22 work and why the Remington 700 footprint still rules that niche.

V-22 360: three-lug, 60° bolt — option, not replacement
On the table: Vudoo’s V-22 360 action. Greg described it as a new addition to the line — a three-lug bolt with a 60° throw — and was clear it’s a supplement, not a replacement for their two-lug bolt. They’re still building the two-lug side. The 360 exists because a lot of shooters come from three-lug centerfires and want that shorter 60° feel on a rimfire.
Practical difference vs a 90° lift: smaller bolt lift, theoretically a bit faster cycling, but you’re also winding the firing-pin spring over less travel, so the lift can feel a touch heavier. Greg’s take: you might not notice unless you try two Vudoos side by side. Rimfire springs are light (he cited roughly 18–22 lb in their guns) compared with centerfire, so even the 60° lift stays fingertip-friendly.
Why the Remington 700 footprint matters
From across the aisle these look like “real” centerfire clones — Remington 700 geometry — and that’s the point. Compared with a 10/22-style or other compact rimfire platforms (Ruger Precision Rimfire, CZ, Tikka T1x, etc.), the 700 inlet opens the whole chassis and trigger ecosystem:
- Chassis / stock options Greg called out: MasterPiece Arms (their best seller at the time), Foundation Exodus, McMillan 700 patterns
- Triggers: standard Rem 700 footprint — Timney, TriggerTech, Huber, Bix’n Andy, and friends
- Magazines: Vudoo’s proprietary mags on an AICS pattern so they play with the same chassis world as your centerfire
Big upside: build a rimfire that mirrors your centerfire — same stock/chassis muscle memory, belt pouches, and stage habits for PRS / NRL22. Greg also noted you can buy a Vudoo action/receiver and drop it into a chassis you already own. Most people won’t swap the same trigger back and forth between rimfire and centerfire (striker/trigger hassle), but the platform overlap still saves a pile of “all-new everything” money if you’re already in 700 land.
Training math: cheap rounds, expensive skills
Greg’s steel story from the show: a shooter on steel at ~468 yards with one of the rifles in the booth. The training pitch is familiar if you’ve been around precision rimfire — ammo cost lets you stay behind the gun.
- Rough compare from the chat: about $130 for 500 rounds of Lapua Center-X vs what you’d burn in centerfire match ammo for a fraction of the round count
- At CompExpo-style events, centerfire match ammo can get ugly fast (he walked through the “hundreds to over a thousand dollars in ammo for one match” problem for non-handloaders)
- Skill transfer: rimfire at longer distances forces wind reading. Greg’s rule of thumb on camera — roughly a 1:4 distance feel (.22 work around 200 yards ballpark vs 6.5 Creedmoor around 800; and the familiar “300-yard rimfire / 1,000-yard centerfire” training idea)
He bought a Vudoo as a customer before he worked there, hauled it to the desert, and would dump 3–400 rounds a day without thinking about it — trigger time, position, mirage, wind. That’s the product.
Ammo & the Ravage chamber
These are “Formula One” .22s in Greg’s words — match-grade chamber. Vudoo’s proprietary Ravage chamber (he called it patented / exclusive) is designed around Lapua Center-X-class ammo. What works in that family on camera:
- Lapua: X-Act, Midas+, Center-X, etc.
- SK line: Long Range Match, Rifle Match, Standard Plus — same size class, runs well
Cheap bulk Walmart bricks? Too loose / wrong for that tight chamber, and you wouldn’t get the performance anyway. On the day they were shooting SK Standard Plus (he ballparked packs around the COVID-era ~$65–80 range vs Center-X higher through Capstone — dated numbers, don’t treat as today’s price list). Everything in that match lane is basically standard-velocity / subsonic; Greg put velocity in the standard-velocity ballpark on a ~70° day depending on barrel length.
For max accuracy once the barrel is broken in with good lead/lube fouling (~1,000 rounds was his example), Lapua and ELEY batch-testing services let you pick lots the way a centerfire shooter tunes a load — sensors at 50 and 100 meters, 10-round groups, buy a case of what your rifle likes.
