Squat Squad, if you’re planning your next AR build, San Tan Tactical just gave you a few more barrels to think about. The company is expanding its 1836 Series with the new Ironclad barrel lineup: four configurations, two in 5.56 NATO and two in 6mm ARC, all with a Black Nitride finish and a gas system matched to the barrel length.
Quick note: this one is based on San Tan Tactical’s press release and San Tan’s own product pages. I haven’t had an Ironclad barrel on one of my rifles yet.
TL;DR
- What it is: a new family of AR barrels in San Tan Tactical’s 1836 Series.
- 5.56 NATO: 11.5″ carbine-length gas and 16″ mid-length gas.
- 6mm ARC: 12.5″ mid-length gas and 18″ rifle-length gas.
- Finish: Black Nitride (QPQ) on all four.
- Quality control: every barrel gets a 100% QC inspection and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI).
- Availability: through San Tan Tactical and its authorized dealers.
The four Ironclad configurations
- 5.56 NATO, 11.5″ carbine length: SKU STT-1836I-115B-556-N
- 5.56 NATO, 16″ mid length: SKU STT-1836I-16B-556-N
- 6mm ARC, 12.5″ mid length: SKU STT-1836I-125B-6ARC-N
- 6mm ARC, 18″ rifle length: SKU STT-1836I-18B-6ARC-N
San Tan pitches the 11.5″ as the compact option for close-quarters builds and calls the 16″ mid-length the flagship general-purpose barrel of the lineup. The 18″ 6mm ARC is aimed at long-range precision, DMR and match builds. The rifle-length gas system there is meant to give you softer cycling and less disruption to your sight picture.
The featured barrel: 12.5″ 6mm ARC
The one San Tan is putting front and center is the 12.5″ 6mm ARC. The idea is to get the 6mm ARC cartridge into a short, handy package. It’s machined from 4150 steel with a straight-fluted profile, which San Tan says cuts weight and adds surface area so the barrel sheds heat faster.
Both 6mm ARC barrels use a 1:7.5 twist and 5R rifling. San Tan says that combination helps stabilize bullets and reduce jacket deformation.
12.5″ 6mm ARC specs (from San Tan Tactical)

Who it’s for
- Home builders who want a barrel with the gas length already matched to the barrel length.
- 6mm ARC fans who want either a short, handy 12.5″ or an 18″ for reaching out.
- SBR and pistol builders looking at the 11.5″ 5.56 (do your NFA and state-law homework first).
- Anyone who wants one do-it-all 5.56. The 16″ mid-length is the classic choice.
My 6mm ARC AR build
I’ve been running 6mm ARC on an AR for a while now. In this video I dig into the FAB AR-Podium on that rifle, and you can see why I like the cartridge on a gas gun:
Our take
There’s nothing exotic here, and I mean that as a compliment. A 4150 barrel with 5R rifling, a 1:7.5 twist for 6mm ARC, Black Nitride, a dimpled .750″ journal and gas lengths that make sense for each barrel length is exactly what most builders want. The 12.5″ 6mm ARC is the one I find most interesting, since it puts a flat-shooting cartridge into a short, handy rifle. The 100% QC and MPI inspection is also a nice thing to see on a production barrel. What I can’t tell you yet is how these shoot. Accuracy is the real test for any barrel, and I’d want to put rounds through one before I call it a winner. On paper, though, the Ironclad line checks the boxes I’d look for on my next build.
Where to find it
San Tan Tactical says the Ironclad barrels are available through San Tan and its authorized dealers. You can find all four on San Tan’s site: 11.5″ 5.56 NATO, 16″ 5.56 NATO, 12.5″ 6mm ARC and 18″ 6mm ARC. Stock was mixed when I checked, and some configurations showed pre-order or backorder.
