Squat Squad — you want a shooting tripod, but you’re more likely to use it to save your back or teach a kid than to hike a match stage in the backwoods. Here’s my hands-on look at the Sunwayfoto TL3240CS — a ready-to-go shooting tripod aimed at the vast majority of gun owners, not just PRS or NRL Hunter hardcores. Why another shooting tripod?
Trends in this industry usually start in competition, then bleed into military/LE, then land with hunters and regular range shooters. We saw that with pistol red dots. We’re seeing it again with shooting tripods — they’re at PRS and NRL Hunter matches, in current conflicts, and increasingly on local ranges. A lot of those sticks are built for maximum ruggedness first. If your “field” is mostly a concrete slab, you may want convenience more than extreme durability. That’s the lane the TL3240CS is trying to fill.
Build and size
I’ve looked at tripods from Vortex, Athlon, and several Sunwayfoto models — they’re generally durable and hold more weight than the ratings suggest. The TL3240CS uses an aluminum + carbon fiber mix, with carbon fiber leg tubes, so you get strength without aluminum-only weight.
- Four-section legs
- Folded length about 21.7 inches
- Max height about 61 inches — usable even if you’re over 6 feet
- Leg angles: about 23°, 55°, and 85° (down to roughly 4.7 inches — bipod-like for prone)
- Weight about 4 lb
- Rated load about 16 kg / 35 lb (the collar-lock T3240CS sibling is rated higher — about 25 kg / 55 lb on the tape)
Prone, kneeling, or standing — adjust height with leg extensions, leg angle, or both.
Lever locks vs collar locks
If this looks familiar, it should: it’s essentially the same platform as the T3240CS I covered earlier, but with flip lever locks instead of twist collars. Collar locks keep the mechanism more sealed — better for wet, dusty hunting or match stages — and stay streamlined so nothing snags open. Lever locks trade some weather sealing for speed: flip, adjust, lock. Same reason camera/video tripods love levers.
Downsides called out on the tape: exposed hardware can bind in bad weather, and levers can loosen over time. On a good tripod like this they’re user-serviceable — it ships with Allen wrenches so you can re-tension how hard the levers open and close. For range-first use, that convenience is hard to ignore.
Feet, head, and mounting
Rubber feet for concrete/hard surfaces screw off; stainless spike feet screw on for soft ground, mud, or sand. Tip from the tape: on muddy/gravel ground, extend the bottom section so the locks sit higher off the dirt.
There’s an embedded ~38 mm ball head with a quick lock lever — lower center of gravity, wide adjustment, about 35° of tilt before you need to re-angle the legs. Two head variants:
- TL3240CSQ (the one on the tape) — Arca/Arca-plate only, with a built-in bubble level
- TL3240CSD — accepts Arca and has a Picatinny interface in the head
If older guns still wear Picatinny forend rails and this is your first shooting tripod, I’d lean CSD. The Q’s bubble level is nice because there’s room for it.
Accessory mounting: 1/4-inch points (one per leg) plus 3/8-inch holes in the base for magic arms — cameras, rangefinders, spotting scopes, etc.
Who it’s for (and accessories)
Is the TL3240CS the right stick for you? If you’re more likely to plant it on a concrete slab than on a windy gravel ridgeline, yes — quicker to deploy and adjust than the collar-lock sibling, even if it isn’t rated as high. Between the two TL heads, I’d still recommend the CSD if you have Picatinny guns in the safe.

- Sunwayfoto stone bag — hang between the legs to add weight / hold ammo, phone, power bank
- M-LOK → Arca adapters (multiple lengths; I ran a longer ~240 mm plate on a 6.5 Grendel Ruger American)
- SM-76 clamp — stable clamp base when you don’t have Arca or M-LOK
- Arca-to-Picatinny rail sections — mount a spare scope/rings (or a prismatic) as a budget spotting setup
- Leg warmers — better grip; less hot/cold on the top sections
Bottom line
The TL3240CS is a smart “all-around” addition to the Sunwayfoto shooting-tripod lineup: carbon legs, useful height range, fast lever locks, and a head choice that covers Arca-only or Arca+Picatinny. Specs and SKUs from the Jul 2022 tape may have moved — check current Sunwayfoto / Amazon listings before you buy.
