Here’s my hands-on look at the Wincent biometric gun safe — a compact two-pistol vault with fingerprint, keypad, and key backup.

Why a small biometric vault instead of a giant safe
Millions of first-time owners bought a handgun to protect the household — and then realized “where does this live at 2 a.m.?” Some states also push you toward a locked container. That does not mean you have to drop a thousand dollars on a Browning, Winchester, or Liberty floor safe on day one.
If you’re starting with one or two handguns and you want nightstand / closet access, a compact quick-access unit makes more sense than a full residential gun vault. Big-name branding (Hornady and friends) often means you’re paying for the sticker on what is basically the same class of steel box. Wincent sits in that “same idea, less brand tax” lane — and that’s why it caught my eye.
What’s in the box: three ways in
This is a two-pistol steel safe meant to mount into a nightstand or closet. Access options on the unit I ran:
- Biometric fingerprint reader — I had it pre-programmed; put a finger on it and the lid pops
- Keypad — set any 3–6 digit code
- Traditional keys — the backup when electronics or batteries fail
That last one matters. My biggest biometric-safe worry is always the same: slow read, dead batteries, and you’re locked out of your own gun. Keys still get you in when everything else ghosts you.
Inside the vault
- Room for two handguns — on camera I fit two full-size 1911s (one orientation each side)
- Or one handgun plus mags / a little ammo
- Thin foam padding top and bottom — enough to fight scratches, not spa-day luxury
- Interior light that stays on a few seconds after open
- Battery compartment on the back for four AAA cells, with a clean cover (no awkward swing-out pack)
It is steel and not featherweight — which is what you want — but you still need to mount it. Two anchors and two screws ship with it; the back has two pre-drilled holes. I’d prefer four holes from the factory, but two is workable. My recommendation: get at least one screw into a stud even if you can’t hit studs with both.
Security details that actually matter on a small box
- Fingerprint storage claimed around up to 50 prints — more enrolled prints generally means more reliable day-to-day reads
- Two latches instead of one, plus anti-pry channel geometry — better than a single-latch toy lid
- Still a small safe: security is mostly “mounted to something solid,” not “stand alone on the carpet and hope”
- Spring open has real tension — if it’s not mounted, the lid can walk the whole unit. Mount it.
Keypad reset (as shown on camera)
On the back there’s a reset button. Press it quickly twice, wait for the beep, enter your new 3–6 digit code, confirm when it double-beeps, repeat to lock it in. Same reset path covers fingerprint reprogramming. Don’t leave the factory demo code forever.
Honest caveats
This is a ~7-minute hands-on first look from early 2022 — features, foam, firmware quirks, and pricing can all move. I did not run a multi-month battery drain test, a tool-assisted pry attack, or a fire rating lab. Treat it as what it is: a compact biometric / keypad / key pistol vault that felt like solid value for nightstand or closet storage when local law wants a locked container. Always follow federal, state, and local storage rules.

If you need a nightstand or closet residential storage container for one or two handguns without spending Liberty money, the Wincent biometric safe hits the useful checklist: fingerprint + keypad + key backup, room for two 1911s, interior light, AAA power, and mount hardware in the box. Mount it to something sturdy (hit a stud), enroll more than one finger, and keep the keys somewhere you’ll actually find them.
