Channel fans and family — you’ve got a nice 10/22 (or a bolt gun) and you want a stock that’s better for longer-range work without dumping chassis money. Here’s my features walkthrough and outdoor impressions on the Boyds At One — a modular hardwood stock that blends wood warmth with chassis-style adjustability. Why upgrade a 10/22 stock?
With more new gun owners and centerfire ammo squeezes, a lot of us are reaching for .22s at the range — fun plinking or practice that actually transfers. Shooting a .22 well past 100 yards (and out toward 300) builds the same fundamentals you need on centerfire at longer distances. The Ruger 10/22 and its clones can shoot; a lot of factory and “plink / backpack” stocks just don’t help you do it precisely. After seeing how accurate our bull-barreled 10/22 action was in a folding FAB-style chassis, I wanted something more precision-focused — enter the Boyds At One.
What the At One is
Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks supports a huge catalog — hardwood and laminate stocks for modern and vintage rifles, bolt guns and semis, Remington, Savage, Ruger, Mosin, and more. The At One is their modular standout: wood look and feel with chassis-like features. It comes in a thumbhole version and the standard version I ran here.
Big draws:
- Adjustable length of pull — button, no spacer stack, no screwdriver at the range
- Adjustable comb height — same push-button ease; critical when optic mount height isn’t ideal, when you swap shooters, or when you need a straight look through the eyepiece
- Modular forend — stock plastic grip or a wider rubberized forend that’s happier on a bag
- Interchangeable grip panels (standard At One only, not thumbhole) — traditional angled grip for standing, or more vertical over-molded panels for bench / target work the way precision shooters prefer
- Optional metal pillars in the action-screw holes for a cleaner bottom-metal-to-action path on actions that use two or three screws
On the site you pick brand and model, then options like standard barrel, bull barrel, or 10/22 takedown. Ours was cut for a thick bull barrel.
Wood fitment reality check
Unlike a metal chassis where everything is usually drop-in, wood stocks have variation. Expect some final fitment — often a little sanding in the barrel channel for a free float, or clearing the bolt-handle channel on a bolt gun. We tuned this one on a live stream in about 30 minutes; off-camera it’s more like 5–10. You don’t have to — plenty of people drop in and go — but if you’re chasing precision, take the extra few minutes.
Range impressions
Rounds downrange: it felt solid and brought out more of what this precision .22 could do. This was my second At One, and I was still impressed — wood warmth with real adjustability, and strong value next to a full chassis. Based on this tape, you’ll see another At One setup on the channel again.
Bottom line
Whether you’re upgrading a basic .22 or building a more precision-focused centerfire, the Boyds At One is a terrific middle path: wood feel, chassis-style modularity, wide firearm coverage, and an exceptional value versus many chassis.
