Booth first look — this is a Shot Show 2023 conversation at the Hodgdon booth, not a range T&E or load-development writeup.
Channel fans and family — if you’ve been hunting temperature-stable powders (or just hunting powders, period), Hodgdon’s StaBall line keeps growing. At Shot Show 2023 I stopped by with Kent to talk about the brand-new StaBall Match and StaBall HD under the Winchester powders banner — and why spherical propellants can mean a little more barrel life.

Where StaBall started
Hodgdon kicked this family off with StaBall 6.5 — an H4350-class, temperature-insensitive spherical propellant that a lot of us first grabbed when H4350 was a unicorn. Over time it earned its own reputation, not just “the backup powder.”
What’s new: Match + HD
Kent walked me through the next two SKUs in that same temperature-insensitive spherical line:
- StaBall Match — Varget-type burn speed. Think .223 / varmint / precision work where Varget has been the gold standard.
- StaBall HD — Reloder 26–class burn speed. This is the one that got people excited in the comments. Magnum hunting / long-range cartridges have been even harder to feed when Reloder 26 (and relatives like Reloder 33 / 7977) disappear from shelves.
Long-range hunting growth in cartridges like 6.5 PRC, 6.8 Western, 300 PRC, and the newer PRCs loves those slower powders. Choices used to be things like Reloder 33 or Reloder 26 — and often you couldn’t find them. Kent’s take: HD is meant to cover that Reloder 26 burn-speed neighborhood as something you can actually get.
Not a drop-in clone
Don’t treat these as 1:1 swaps for Reloder 33 / 7977 / Reloder 26. Kent called HD its own unique beast — more focused / narrower application than classic Reloder 26. In the middle of that burn-speed range you may not see a huge difference; out on the fringes of a load book, it may simply not work for your combo. Work up carefully and use published data.
Load data was already in the 2023 Hodgdon Annual and on the Hodgdon Reloading Data Center site for the cartridges we were talking about. Use that, not vibes.
Why “longer barrel life”?
Spherical propellants meter very consistently — handloaders already know that part. The quieter advantage Kent highlighted: typically lower flame temperatures than traditional extruded / cylindrical propellants, which can mean less throat erosion and a bit more barrel life. Not magic. Not a free lunch. Just one more reason some of us like ball powders in hotter cartridges.
Availability & pricing (as of that booth chat)
At the show, Kent said these were not going to be unicorns — first shipments of one-pounders for Match and HD had already gone into distribution the week before. Pricing: a little above a “standard” propellant, in the same neighborhood as where StaBall 6.5 sat.
Shelves and pricing move. Check your usual retailers and always verify current load data before you drop a charge.
