Squat Squad — NRA 2023 was my first NRA show, and Winchester dropped a cartridge announcement that made me do a double-take. Not a 350 Legend relaunch. A brand-new 400 Legend. I sat down with Ben from Winchester to ask the only question that matters for straight-wall hunters: what problem does this actually solve?

The sweet spot between 350 Legend and 450 Bushmaster
350 Legend opened a lot of doors in straight-wall states for whitetail and hogs — easy-shooting, works in MSRs, bolt guns, and single-shots. Ben’s read of the feedback: people loved the 350 but wanted more energy and heavier bullets without jumping all the way into 450 Bushmaster recoil.
Winchester’s answer was the middle lane: 400 Legend. On camera, Ben compared roughly 215-grain bullets versus something like a 180-grain Power-Point class load on 350 Legend — more mass, with energy that can approach what you expect from 450 Bushmaster, but with much less shoulder tax. (Those numbers are what Winchester said at the booth — check current Winchester load data for what’s on shelves now.)
Platforms: bolts first, then AR-15-size MSRs
At launch timing on this tape, Ben expected bolt guns first for fall hunting season, with MSR / AR work already in progress and magazines sorted. Important for builders: he said it stays on an AR-15-size receiver — not an AR-10 jump — with a different magazine and bolt. Bolt face was described as matching 6.8 SPC territory, but the case itself is purpose-built (not “just neck up a 6.8 parent”).
That parts commonality was intentional — make it easier for manufacturers and faster for shooters to get guns into the wild, same playbook that helped 350 Legend cross platforms.
Purpose-built .40 rifle bullets (not a 40 S&W dump)
Yes, it’s a .40-caliber story — but Ben was clear these are rifle hunting bullets designed around 400 Legend performance. Throwing random 40 S&W projectiles in there isn’t how Winchester engineered the load, and he didn’t expect that DIY path to deliver the results you’d want. Same vibe as people who tried to get clever with 350 Legend bullet swaps.
Who it’s for (and who it isn’t)
Still a straight-wall / woods-range cartridge in Ben’s framing — think on the order of ~300 yards, not a Western open-country thumper. Great lane for Midwest / Northeast deer country, hogs, and close-range work. He wouldn’t personally pick it as his go-to western hunt rifle. States that recently opened more rifle options (Illinois came up on camera) are exactly the crowd looking at 350, 450 Bushmaster, and now 400.
Suppressors on the roadmap
One of the next loads Ben mentioned in development was a 300-grain option in Winchester’s Super Suppressed line, aimed at usable expansion even down around subsonic speeds — with conversations already happening with silencer makers. Treat that as booth roadmap, not a promise that every can on your shelf is already stamped for it.
Launch timing from the booth
SAAMI approval had already hit earlier that year; NRA was the “talk to shooters” moment. Goal on tape: ammo and rifles lined up for that fall hunting season — ammo likely on shelves a bit before rifles in some shops, same dance every new cartridge does in year one.
Bottom line
If 350 Legend felt a little light and 450 Bushmaster felt like a tax on your shoulder, 400 Legend was Winchester’s explicit bid for the middle. Bolt gun for deer season, eventual AR-15-size builds for the tinkerer crowd — that’s the pitch Ben walked through at NRA 2023.
